WSR edges GES, 4-3, to win soccer title

WILLIAM S. Reyes Elementary School 2 claimed the elementary school division championship title of the NMIFA-PSS Interscholastic Soccer League after outlasting Garapan Elementary School 1, 4-3, Wednesday at the NMI Soccer Training Center in Koblerville.

WSR 2 played aggressively on both ends of the field with Joshua Lizama making several defensive steals and scoring the first two goals at the 10th and 12th minute marks for a 2-0 lead.

GES 1 fought back with all their might but failed to find the back of the net due to WSR 2’s defense.

WSR 2 then continued to build momentum with Izaiah Tenorio slipping through the cracks and connecting the midrange shot at the 19th minute mark to widen his team’s lead, 3-0.

In the second half, GES 1’s Kanoa Owens was finally rewarded for his efforts as he scored two consecutive goals to reduce the gap.

However, WSR 2’s Lizama completed the hat-trick with his third goal of the day to regain the safe distance, 4-2.

Owens scored a third goal for GES 1 but they ran out of time and WSR 2 took home the championship, 4-3.

WSR 2’s Joshua Lizama was named Finals MVP and the top performer. For his part, GES 1’s Kanoa Owen received the Golden Boot Award.

In the battle for third place, Grace Christian Academy came out on top against WSR 1, 2-1.
