Updated: Nov 26, 2021

The One FC delivered in the penalty shootout anew to beat Bangladesh FC, 3-2, in the finals of the Marianas Soccer League 2 Summer Season last Sunday at the NMI Soccer Training Center in Koblerville.

Scott Kim, Ming Guang Xu, and Don Cabrera made their PK to hand The One FC the title win and complete the team’s strong run in the playoffs. The One FC was the third seeded squad in the playoffs and pulled off an upset over No. 2 Bangladesh Youth, also in the shootout (3-2), to reach the finals against No. 4 Bangladesh FC.

In the one-game finale, Bangladesh FC, which stunned No. 1 seed Saipan United in the other semis match, 3-0, and The One FC engaged in a scoreless draw in regulation, bringing the championship duel into the PK shootout.

Kim and Xu made the first two attempts for The One FC and hit their targets, while Cabrera’s conversion came after the back-to-back misses from Ri Cheng Zian and Boaz Soo Hyun Lim. Kim, Xu, and Cabrera were the same three players that saved The One FC in its semis match over Bangladesh Youth.

Bangladesh FC, on the other hand, had Md. Sohel Akanda drilling his PK and third shooter Abdul Luylu Shahanewaz doing the same after a muffed attempt from Md. Titu Ahmed. Bangladesh FC was then held to just two PK when its last two shooters—Harun Morol and Kamrul Kamrul faltered.

In three consolation matches, Bangladesh Youth, the NMI Women’s National Team, and Matansa won against their respective opponents. In the battle for third place, Bangladesh Youth downed Saipan United, 2-0, behind the goals of Mohammad Shariff Uddin and Shakib Shakib. In the race for the fifth place honors, the NMI WNT won over Shirley’s FC in a penalty shootout, 5-4, while Matansa took the seventh place after a victory via forfeit against Island Star.

Meanwhile, last Thursday’s match in the MSL between TanHoldings Football Club and Kanoa Football Club was rescheduled to Oct. 7, while results in Sunday’s games in the division will be reported in Saipan Tribune’s Wednesday issue.
