Shirley’s, MP United atop women’s soccer

Shirley’s Football Club and MP United Football Club reached the top of the standings after Week 9 of the Flores-Péé Luwal Division of the 2023 Spring Dove Women’s League at the NMI Soccer Training Center in Koblerville last Sunday.

In a turn of events, Shirley’s have silenced the hot Southern United Football Club, 8-0, while MP United doubled Matansa, 4-2.

Shirley’s throttled the gas early as they put the brakes on SUFC’s winning streak.

Just three minutes in, Jeraldine Castillo found the back of the net for an early lead. The teams then battled it out on the field for a silent next few minutes, but Marilou Arriola made it 2-0 in the 21st minute.

Shirley’s continued to display their superior ball control and positioning, frequently penetrating SUFC’s defense and creating scoring opportunities, with Castillo completing the hat-trick back-to-back for a 4-0 game.

They continued their relentless attack at the net in the second half and scored four more goals made by Marielle Lopez, Arriola, Mikayla Lopez, and another goal by Castillo.

As for MP United, despite the first goal made by Matansa’s Jenna Tenorio in the 13th minute, they managed to claw their way to victory.

Moriah Sablan equalized the game in the 22nd minute and MP United immediately took the lead just three minutes later off a goal by Loriann Rabe.

The second and last goal by Matansa was made in the 30th minute and MP United capitalized and scored the tie-breaking goal six minutes later. They added one more goal for good measure in the 42nd minute and that was more than enough to get the W.

In the last game of the day, Tan Holdings scooped the 1-0 win from Kanoa after their goal made by Christine Beceril in the 58th minute.

In the standings, Shirley’s and MP United have kicked SUFC out of first place with a 5-2-1 record each. SUFC is in third place with 5-1-2; fourth is Kanoa with 4-0-4; Paire has a 2-0-5 record; Tan Holdings is at 1-2-4; and Matansa has yet to win with 0-3-5.
