SSHS steals win against MCS in last minute of HS soccer

Mark Patubo carried the Saipan Southern High School boys’ soccer team to victory in a last-minute charge at the goal to steal the win against Mount Carmel School, 3-2, last Tuesday during the NMIFA-PSS Interscholastic Soccer League game at the NMI Soccer Training Center in Koblerville.

In dramatic fashion, Patubo scored the tie-breaking third goal to clinch the victory for the Mantas with less than 30 seconds left on the game clock, which rightfully triggered a burst of cheers and whoops from his teammates and supporters. The third and final goal completed the hat-trick for Patubo, with the first couple of goals scored in the 30th minute then the 38th minute.

The Knights fought valiantly as the game almost ended in a draw after they came back from a 1-0 game before the first goal from Gabby San Nicolas in the 37th minute. Markus Toves then tied up the game in the 41st minute.

The Knights kicked a few attempts at the goal to hopefully take the lead first, but would miss each one, with the Mantas scoring the tie-breaking goal.

The Mantas’ lineup include the aforementioned Patubo, Simon Tang, Monaco Claridades, Jonne Navarro, Larry Marquez, Anthony Austria, Carl Salas, Ron Patricio, Michael Peters, Vu Arachige, and Jack Paul Lizama.

The Knights are the aforementioned San Nicolas, Toves, Jared Terlaje, Jose Mafnas, Leo Naraga, Raymond Salas, Min Soo Kwon, Ruben Guerrero, Devin Propst, Sam Lee, Derek Sasamoto, Earl Lacadazo, and Brandon Lee.

Meanwhile, Saipan International School won against Marianas High School junior varsity via forfeit.
