Tanapag, SIS to vie for soccer title
TANAPAG Middle School and Saipan International School will play today, Thursday, for the middle school boys division title of the NMIFA-PSS Interscholastic Soccer League after winning their semifinal matches at the NMI Soccer Training Center in Koblerville.
Tanapag Middle School secured their spot in the finals by edging Mount Carmel School, 2-1.
It seemed like a championship match between the two teams as it was filled with high-paced exchanges. After 10 minutes of back-and-forth, MCS had the momentum and used it to apply pressure, eventually breaking through to allow Stephen to score.
But TMS quickly recovered and after a few minutes of action, Jayten Villagomez found the back of the net to even the score, 1-1.
The match seemed headed to an overtime shootout as neither team could penetrate. However, at the 40th minute mark, TMS took advantage of a crack in their opponent’s defensive wall, allowing Javen Camacho to deliver and give Tanapag the lead, 2-1.
With little time left, MCS failed to even the score.
SIS vs SCS
In the other semifinal match, Saipan International School held down Saipan Community School, 2-1.
SIS’ Taiga Namai-Scoggins scored in the first half while team mate Moshe Sikkel delivered in the second.
SCS managed to put up a fight with Landon Springer scoring at the 37th minute mark before settling for defeat, 1-2.
SCS and MCS will do battle for third place today, Thursday, at 4 p.m. while TMS and SIS will vie for the title at 5:30 p.m.
