SIS beats Hopwood to win soccer title

SAIPAN International School claimed the girls middle school division title of the NMIFA-PSS Interscholastic Soccer League by outplaying Hopwood Middle School, 2-0, Thursday at the NMI Soccer Training Center in Koblerville. It was a fierce battle that was highlighted by several back-and-forth exchanges and shot attempts. Defense also played a major part in the game, but it was SIS that transformed interception into an offensive push. At the sixth minute mark, SIS’s Beatrice Gross attempted a shot a few feet from midfield that landed short, but it bounced over the defensive goalie’s reach to give SIS the lead, 1-0. Hopwood fought hard to equalize but failed to break through SIS’s line of defense. SIS gradually wore down Hopwood, and at the 43rd minute mark Beatrice’s sister, Phoenix, added the icing on the cake, 2-0, to bag the championship for SIS. Named the finals MVP was SIS’s Kylie Claveria whose defensive interceptions and offensive set ups aided in her team’s victory. Hopwood’s Alyssa Borlongan, for her part, won the Golden Boot Award for scoring 20 goals in the season. In the battle for third place, Tanapag Middle School outscored Dandan Middle School, 4-2.
