SIS and SSHS boys soccer ends in draw

Saipan International School Geckos and Saipan Southern High School Manta Rays ended their match in a 1-1 draw last Thursday in the NMIFA-PSS Interscholastic Soccer League opener at the NMI Soccer Training Center in Koblerville.

SSHS’ Mark Patubo took control of the ball in the second minute for the first and only goal for the team, with Ian Song of SIS jamming their goal 33 minutes in.

Both teams were unable to break the stalemate as the shot clock wound down to zero with just one goal each on the board. In the second game of the day, the Mount Carmel School Knights won over Marianas High School Dolphins Junior Varsity via forfeit, 3-0.

For this season, four varsity teams are vying for high school soccer gold, with the Knights currently at one win, SSHS and SIS with a draw each, and MHS yet to play. MHS JV is at one loss.

The schedule for the rest of the season continues on Nov. 10 with MCS versus MHS and MHS JV versus SSHS. On Nov. 15, MHS will challenge its JV team, followed by SIS versus MCS. On Nov. 17, it’s SIS versus MHS JV and SSHS versus MHS, then the last regular season games are MCS against SSHS and MHS against SIS.

The championship is set for Nov. 29 for the battle for third place and Dec. 1 for gold.
